Books and movies about the â€Å"end times† have made the closing book of the Bible famous. Full of strange visions and stunning glimpses into other worlds, Revelation has been perhaps the most debated book in the Bible. Originally entitled Apocalypse, which means the â€Å"unveiling† or â€Å"disclosure† of things only known to God, the book reveals the end of the world in highly symbolic language. The letters that are written to the Seven Churches are found in chapters two and three of the Book of Revelation. In John’s vision, Jesus dictates letters to the seven churches of Asia Minor that can be related to the church even today. Comprehension of the letters can take many forms. They can be understood or can be related to the church in universal terms or for the life of the church at throughout history. John is instructed by Jesus to write letters to seven churches. The letters follow the same format and each has seven sections. The seven churched John wrote to were Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. The churches John was writing to struggled with poverty, heresy, and dissension. But Revelation is also an open letter to all Christians, including those of us who follow Christ today. Revelation challenged believers to remain loyal to the truth and persevere amidst their suffering. â€Å"The letters to all of the churches begin with a description of Jesus.
